Upgrading Wordpress with Fantastico

July 24th, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Random

Todays job for HaGG.US was upgrading Wordpress to 2.6 to get the nice Caption feature. I almost forgot that I had used Fantastico to install the blog in the first place. Does it get any easier? I’m forever uploading files and updating forums, if only Fantastico supported more scripts.

So for all you wordpress users, while your uploading your files, backing up your databases and gritting your teeth. We hit a button and it does all the work for us.

Highly recommend the host below if your looking for a Fantastico Host.

Installing Old Versions of XP via Boot Camp

July 21st, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Mac, Tech

Boot CampI recently ran into a problem installing XP on my Mac via Boot Camp. Boot Camp requires the service pack 2 (SP2) update, so older versions of XP will not work.

So what can you do? I had a good look around the web and found a great free program called nLite.

nLite let’s you install the original or SP1 editions of XP and make them Boot Camp compatible.

First you take the XP installation files from your installation directory if your using XP or if your like me and using Vista you can put the XP CD in and copy them across that way. Then using the interface you can add the Service Pack needed.

You will need to download the Service Pack as a install file from the Microsoft website. If you’re after Service Pack 2 you can download it here. If your using the latest version of Boot Camp then you can use the more recent Service Pack 3 from here.

You then locate this file using nLite and it will mesh the update and install files together to make a ISO or disk you can burn to install on your mac. It also can save you time by allowing you to select preferences for keyboard, time and serial keys etc before time so your not required to keep checking on your installation.

So don’t go out buying SP2 XP and give this a try, it’s quick and painless.

Macbook Wireless Issues?

July 21st, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Mac, Macbook, Tech

WirelessI have been struggling from wireless issues ever since I bought my Macbook in December. I’ve been waiting for Apple to come out with a fix, but they still haven’t to this date, despite the enormous thread on the support forums.

For those having stability issues, disconnecting all the time then this fix might work for you. The strength of the wireless is still below par compared to boot camp Windows XP but the stability has improved.

Right now I’m posting this in my garden, that’s something I couldn’t do before.

Thanks to SouthernDoc who posted this at the MacRumours forums.

1. Open network preferences from your WiFi icon in the menu bar. Then click advanced. Delete the network that is giving you problems.

2. Open Keychain in the utilities folder of your hard drive. Find the passwords that are stored for your particular network and delete them. There may be multiple passwords for your network, so search carefully.

3. Repair permissions using the disk utility.

4. Reboot the computer.

5. Reenter your network data to log into the network.

Review: Dell E248WFP 24″ Monitor

July 7th, 2008 | 5 Comments | Posted in Reviews, Tech

I thought this would be a good one to start the site off with. I purchased the Dell E248WFP back in May of this year I had a good look around the Internet and found very mixed opinions, I decided to take the plunge and these are my thoughts.

The aim was to get the best value 24″ monitor I could find, although I wouldn’t buy a Dell computer, I had heard good things about there monitors. I found the monitor for £255 off a well known auction site with a no pixel guarantee and 3 year Dell warranty. You can now get it for £244 from Overclockers, I highly recommend them. Considering my previous 19″ Viewsonic monitor was £350 I was a bit skeptical of what I would get.

Dell E248WFP

All ready and setup!

First impressions

Dell packaged the product really well, came with 2 monitor leads, CD which I didn’t install and instructions which of course, I didn’t read. Setup was a breeze, everything connects quickly like it should. No dead pixels!

The monitor is massive, you’re always going to think that, especially coming from a 19″ monitor but it doesn’t take long until you get used to it. Standard colors of the monitor were pretty bad, but the beauty of the Internet allows you to search for some good settings.

Design

Dell E248WFP

Side Shot

You would expect cheap looking tat for the price but you get the opposite, the monitor looks really professional, border isn’t thick around the screen and the dell logo isn’t in your face like some brands. The stand makes the monitor look better and is very stable.

As mentioned in many reviews the monitor lacks a height adjustment which to me isn’t an issue at all, you can tilt the screen if needed. The monitor doesn’t have a HDMI connection which might put some off if you wish to connect a xbox 360 or ps3 to it. It’s possible using an adapter but I don’t know what the results would be like, I would still prefer to play on a HD TV.

Screen

I read a lot of different things about the monitor’s color and brightness. I read that the color shifts as you move your head, well I’ve not experienced this at all, I can stand to the side, stand up, crouch down and it’s the same to me, maybe if you stand at incredibly silly viewing angles.

As mentioned earlier, the color setup wasn’t too great, but the settings are adjustable to get you that perfect look. After some fiddling I got a setup that I was happy with and there’s plenty of forum threads discussing it.

I’m a Web Designer and always use Photoshop, I always check my work on multiple monitors but I’ve never had to come back and change the color of my site, it gets a thumbs up from me.

I’ve watched plenty of HD content and DVD’s, picture is sharp and colors are very good, never experienced any issues with the way it looks. There was noticeable bleed on my previous Viewsonic monitor, but none on this, blacks are also very good on good quality content.

I’ve read that the screen isn’t bright enough, It’s very bright and like many, I’ve turned my down, it’s my preference but I really don’t think it’s an issue.

Gaming

E248WFP Gaming

Good ol' Call Of Duty 4

This monitor also delivers on the gaming front, the response time is great at 5ms and playing games at 1920 x 1200 is always a great experience. Big monitors are always demanding on games to play in the higher resolutions so make sure you have a nice graphics card. I use a ATI 3870 which I got last December, it’s considered out dated now but delivers good FPS on this monitor.

Conclusion

This monitor delivers at an amazing price, monitors really have improved over the years. I was so surprised when I first got it. However, I must point out that I still read reviews about bad viewing angles, It could be a quality control issue, I honestly do not see anything.

I’m very happy that I went a head with the purchase and It’s a keeper, If you come across this review and have any questions feel free to comment and I will get back to you.
